Rights of Way

Hertfordshire has an extensive Rights of Way network of over 5200 paths totalling more than 3000km. These paths are shown on a map and have a written description in a legal record called the Definitive Map & Statement, which is looked after by the County Council's Rights of Way Service at County Hall, Hertford.

The Rights of Way Service has two teams;
The Countryside Access Team, deals with maintenance & enforcement issues across the network, rights of way improvement plan, open access land and recreational routes
The Definitive Map Team, deals with the changes to the definitive map & statement (modifications and public path orders)

The Rights of Way Service also maintains the register of commons & greens.

Each Officer covers an area of the county as shown in the map below. All enquiries and reports should be directed to the Customer Call Centre on 0300 123 4047 in the first instance.
