Applying for In-Year Admissions
In Year admissions allocations
All local authorities now have a statutory duty to coordinate all in year admissions (primary and secondary) for all maintained schools and academies. This became a requirement in September 2010. Previously in Hertfordshire the vast majority of In Year admissions were dealt with directly by schools.
This means that all applications for, and allocations of, in year places must be made via a child's home local authority. All parents living in Hertfordshire who wish to make an in year application must apply to Hertfordshire County Council using the in year application form and not by applying direct to schools.
Making An Application
If you live in Hertfordshire, you must use the new in year application form available below to apply for all schools including voluntary aided and foundation schools and academies. If you live outside Hertfordshire, you should apply to the local authority where your child lives.
Hertfordshire schools are very popular and it is not always possible to offer you the place you want for your child. We need a process to decide which children get a place when there are more applications than places available. These arrangements must be fair and follow the requirements of School Admissions code. See the link below for information about In Year admission rules.

Frequently Asked Questions
Please read the In Year Application Guidance Booklet available though the link above for full details about in year admissions.
What is an In Year admission?
An In Year Admission is when a child already attends a school but wishes to transfer to another school outside of the usual transfer time eg the move from primary to secondary school. This is usually because the child is moving to a different address but can be for other reasons as well. These transfers usually take place during the academic year which is why they are referred to as In Year Admissions.
How can I make an In Year application?
All the information - Guidance for parents, Application Form and School Directories – is provided in the links above and to the left. All Hertfordshire schools and academies also have copies of the application forms available.
Many voluntary aided and foundation schools, and academies, have a supplementary information form that you should complete in addition to the Hertfordshire County Council form - please ask the school for more information.
When will I hear about my child’s in year allocation?
We aim to let you know the result of your application within 10 working days of your application being received, although during busy times and school holidays this may be longer. Your application may also be delayed if you do not include all of the required documentation.
Which schools have vacancies?
Many Hertfordshire schools will already be full and may only have occasional vacancies when a child leaves the school. As vacancies are filled weekly, any information you receive about vacancies at a school is only valid at the time the information is given. A vacancy may be filled by the time your application is processed, or there may be a child higher up on the priority list for the school.
For information about vacancies at particular schools, please follow the link on the left.
Has my application form been received?
We aim to contact you within 10 working days of receipt of your application form. If you have not heard from us within that time and wish to find out if your application form has been received, please contact the Customer Service Centre on 0300 123 4043.
I want to apply for a Hertfordshire school but I don't live in Hertfordshire?
You can apply for a Hertfordshire school via your own local authority (the authority you pay your council tax too). You should contact your own local authority to obtain an in year application form. You are advised to speak to the school direct to check whether any additional information is required eg baptism certificates.
Why can I only have 3 preferences ?
In September 2010 all local authorities had to introduce a scheme of coordination for In Year admissions. The scheme had to outline how coordination would work, how applications would be processed and how offers would be made. Hertfordshire’s scheme allows parents to express three preferences on their In Year application form; the same number of preferences allowed at the normal school transfer processes.
What happens if I cannot be offered a place at a school I want?
Your child will be placed on a continuing interest list for any schools we are unable to offer you that were ranked higher than the school place that was offered to you. For example, if we can offer a place at your second ranked school, we would put your child's name on the continuing interest list for your first ranked school. Your child will then be considered for any future places that become available at schools you are on the continuing interest list at, in accordance with the published admission rules.
