Dvorak's Stabat Mater and Beethoven's Egmont Overture

Venue: Harpenden High Street Methodist Church

Date:Saturday 20th March 2010

Time: 7:30 pm

The King’s Sinfonietta and the Harpenden Choral Society join forces to present Dvorak’s beautiful setting of the Franciscan Jacopone da Todi’s 13th century poem, Stabat Mater, a deeply felt reflection upon the sorrows of the Virgin Mother upon the crucifixion of her Son. In this heartfelt response to the tragic loss of all three of his children, Dvorak combines influences from the choral traditions of his Czech homeland, Baroque religiosity, Wagner’s music dramas and Brahms’ symphonies in a work of profound and solemn beauty. Its huge success in 1880 firmly established Dvorak’s fame in England, which quickly spread to the rest of the English-speaking world.

Beethoven’s Egmont Overture takes as its subject the history and the heroism of the count of Egmont, the Flemish hero. In the music Beethoven expressed his own political concerns, particularly the heroic exaltation of the sacrifice of a man condemned to death by having taken a strong stand against oppression. Come and experience for yourself the enduring power of these remarkable works.
