Hertfordshire Additional Needs Database (HAND)

HAND leaflet 2004 Previously called the disability register, HAND is a register of children and young people with an additional need or disability, aged between 0 and 19 years of age.

Why Join HAND?

You will get a card showing that your child is registered on the database. The card has been of great help to existing members in getting assistance and understanding for their child in many different situations.

Registering on HAND also entitles to a copy of the quarterly publication HAND News. This enables members to stay informed of new and changing services, play schemes, holiday schemes and welfare benefits. (HAND News can also be viewed via the ‘More about HAND’ link below)

Occasionally be invited to get involved in relevant consultations.

Who can join?

Any child aged 0-19 who has an additional need or disability which have a substantial impact upon their everyday life. They are likely to need additional support, adjustments, and / or aids and adaptations to help them at school and at home. One form should be completed per child. (further information via the ‘More about HAND’ link below)

What will I need to complete the registration?

Nothing. You will be asked for contact details, details about your child’s disabilities and additional needs and whether you think their needs are being met. Unlike the disability register, medical examination or opinion is not required. Registering will not affect eligibility for services following an assessment.

How do I register?

The link in blue on the right of this page will take you straight to the form. It will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. A membership card will be issued shortly after you application has been made. We will contact you every two years to check that your details are up to date.
