Fire hydrants

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service provide a maintenance and repair service for all the hydrants situated within the boundaries for Hertfordshire.

Hydrants are assigned a risk category based upon the adjacent risks found in the vicinity of the hydrant location. High risk hydrants are checked for their operational efficacy once per year whilst all other hydrants are checked on a three yearly rotational basis.

Trained and qualified inspecting officers inspect the 26,331 hydrants of Hertfordshire for defects that include
  • Damaged or blocked hydrant pits
  • Letting by of the main valve
  • Ensuring the frost valve or outlet is operative
  • Ensuring the 65mm round thread outlet is free from damage and is not blocked by debris
  • Ensuring that the hydrant location post is positioned correctly not damage and free from obstruction
  • Flow tests are also carried out
