Wake up to smoke alarms!
By alerting you to a fire in its early stages smoke alarms can give you valuable extra seconds to escape uninjured.
They are available for just a few pounds from most DIY, hardware and electrical shops. They should display a Kitemark and British Standard number 5446 Part 1.
If you live in a flat or bungalow, one smoke alarm should be enough to warn you of a fire and should be fitted in the hall, between the living and sleeping areas. If your home has more than one floor, fit one alarm at the bottom of the staircase and another on each upstairs landing.
In addition, you can fit alarms in other rooms where fire may start, such as the living room, but not in the kitchen or bathroom, as cooking fumes or steam may cause them to sound.
When fitting an alarm, follow the manufacturer's instructions. Alarms should usually be screwed into the ceiling at least 30 centimetres (12 inches) away from any wall or light fitting and as close to the centre of the hall, landing or room ceiling as possible.
Once they are installed, check the battery once a month by pressing the test button. Once a year consideration should be given to changing the battery and the inside of the alarm vacuumed to ensure that the sensor is not being blocked by dust.
