The Road to Recovery after...
Advice on what to do after a flood, car fire, a business fire and a chimney fire.
A flood
When clearing up and drying out after a flood it is vitally important that you do not do anything that will result in a further problem - for instance a fire caused by a faulty or wet electrical item.
The Fire and Rescue Service can help by pumping out water (there maybe a charge for this service) and salvaging household items and there are many companies which specialise in the cleaning and drying of carpets and other furnishings.
A car fire
If it is your car that has been involved in fire, it is your responsibility to remove the vehicle. Many garages or recovery services can be used for this purpose. You do not need to report a car fire to the police, unless other factors are involved, such as arson or a road traffic accident where someone has been injured.
A business
You should discover why the fire started and change working practices or fire prevention procedures to insure it does not occur again.
After a chimney fire:
- Place a fireguard in front of the fire.
- Place a bucket of water in the grate to catch any hot embers that may fall from the chimney.
- Leave the chimney to cool for at least 24 hours.
- Have the chimney swept before re-lighting the fire and thereafter at should be swept at least twice a year, especially at the end of the heating season.
Remember: A copy of the fire report or fire investigation (if carried out,) can be obtained by contacting the Fire and Rescue service. There will be a charge for this service.
