After the fire service has left

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service is called to a great many fires, floods and other emergencies every year and our firefighters witness at first hand the destruction and heartbreak these incidents can cause.

If you have been unfortunate enough to suffer a fire or flood at your home or business, we understand the problems you may face once the flames have been extinguished or the water removed.

We also understand that because you are unlikely to have experienced a similar event before, you may be feeling upset and distraught and may not be aware of all the steps you now need to take.

It is for this reason that we have compiled this booklet and we hope it will answer some of the questions that may arise once our firefighters have left.

As well as offering practical advice on what to do first, how to replace valuable documents and how to start cleaning up, it also suggests ways that you can protect yourself from the dangers of fire in the future.

The Fire and Rescue Service is here to help and if you would like any further information or advice on any aspect of fire safety at home or at work, please contact your local Community Safety Office.
