Thatched roofs - some safety tips

Thatched roofs are more vulnerable to fire and Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue is taking part in a regional safety campaign to promote safety guidelines for people whose homes have thatched roofs.

Safety guidelines include:
  • Have your chimney swept at least once a year and the brickwork checked regularly by a professional builder.
  • Watch out for cables overhanging your house
  • Check that you have working smoke alarms fitted, particularly in the highest part of the roof
  • Have electrical systems checked regularly and unplug non-essential electrical equipment.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher just inside the kitchen door and make sure that all of your family know how to use it
  • Be vigilant when tradesmen carry out work on your home – treble check for smouldering debris and make sure they have an extinguisher on hand.
  • Make sure neighbours are aware of the danger to your home from bonfires

Anyone who would like a free home safety check can call Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s freephone number on 0800 5873347 where you can arrange an appointment. All safety checks are carried out by uniformed personnel who will show an official ID card and always use an agreed password.
