Sleep safely....

Many fires in the home start at night. Make sure you have a bedtime fire safety routine, to help keep your home and family safe.

Here are a few simple things which you should do every night:
  • Unplug all electrical appliances not designed to stay on
  • make sure no cigarettes are still burning
  • before emptying ashtrays make sure the contents are cold
  • put a guard around open fires
  • switch off portable heaters
  • close the doors of unoccupied rooms

Remember too that a smoke alarm can give you and your family a few precious minutes of warning should a fire occur. So Wake up: Get a smoke alarm!

Also remember that:
  • The risk of fire accidents is greater when alcohol has been consumed. The two don’t mix!
  • Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children
If you discover a fire:
  • Get everyone out immediately
  • Close all doors behind you
  • Call the Fire & Rescue Service on 999. Any fire, or suspected fire, is an emergency!
  • Do not go back into the house until a fire officer has told you it is safe to do so
