Census 1991

The 1991 Census provided the nearest thing to definitive counts of the population until the results from the 2001 Census became available. Detailed information about the population was obtained, and summarised at Ward level (typically 5,000 people) and Enumeration Districts, smaller areas of around 500 people. Please note that direct comparison of 1991 and 2001 Census results is not entirely reliable as the two censuses were carried out on slightly different bases.

Precise definitions were prepared for all of the settlements in Hertfordshire at 1991, and population counts by demographic characteristics have been prepared.
