Which geographic areas are 2001 census results published for?

Aggregated results from the 2001 census are provided in statistical tables giving data for a range of geographies:

Hierarchical geographic levels:
  • National and Sub-national levels e.g. UK and England.
  • Government Office Region level. e.g. East of England.
  • Local authority (county, district and unitary council) level. In addition to Hertfordshire there are 10 district councils: Broxbourne, Dacorum, East Hertfordshire, Hertsmere, North Hertfordshire, St Albans, Stevenage, Three Rivers, Watford and Welwyn Hatfield.
  • Electoral ward level. – there are 193 electoral wards in Hertfordshire which nest within local authority areas.
  • Output Area level. - output areas are the smallest geographic area at which detailed statistics are available, comprising approximately 125 households. Outputs areas have been designed to nest within ward and civil parish boundaries and will form the building blocks from which larger areas can be defined. There are 3,396 output areas in Hertfordshire.

Non-hierarchical geographic levels:
  • Parliamentary Constituency level.
  • Health Authority and Primary Care Trust area levels.
  • Civil Parish level. - there are currently 126 civil parishes within Hertfordshire. Not all areas have a parish or town council, three of Hertfordshire's districts have no parishes at all, (Broxbourne, Stevenage and Watford) and large towns such as Letchworth, Hemel Hempstead, St Albans and Welwyn Garden City do not either.
  • Urban area level.
  • Postcode sector level (subject to confidentiality thresholds).
  • Postcode level. – Only headcounts will be available at this level.
Census results are available on hertsdirect.org for electoral ward and larger geographies in the hierarchical levels and civil parishes in the non-hierarchical levels.
