SEN Adviser There is one in each of the four areas of the county advising on SEN matters to schools and other professionals
SEN Advisory Teacher There is one working with each SEN Adviser on whole school SEN issues
SENCO SEN Co-ordinator - The link teacher on the school’s staff who you can liaise with if you are concerned about your child’s progress. The SENCO manages and co-ordinates provision to meet individual needs but will not necessarily teach your child
SEND Special Educational Needs and Discrimination Act
SENDIST The Special Education Needs and Disability Tribunal - An independent panel that hears appeals lodged by parents and carers against SEN decisions made by HCC. The tribunal's decision will be binding on both parties to the appeal. SENDIST hears most claims of unlawful discrimination in admissions, exclusions and education and associated services in school.
SENGO Special Educational Needs Governor - Governor of a school designated to oversee SEN provision. Schools may ask one or a small group of governors to be particularly interested in SEN matters

Special school A school which is resourced and organised to provide for the education of pupils with a statement who need a smaller class environment, a high degree of support in the learning situation and in some cases specialist facilities, equipment and teaching
Specialist school Schools which use government grants and business sponsorship to improve their facilities and resources in languages, art, sport or technology
Specialist teacher A specialist teacher is trained to delivery Wave 3 interventions for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and to provide assessment for them to gain GCSE arrangements
SpLD Specific Learning Difficulty – type of SEN – sometimes referred to as dyslexia.A SpLD Base provides a range of support to schools including in-service training, a resource centre and outreach support

Statutory of Special Educational Needs A document produced by the LEA for children with significant learning difficulties that sets out a child’s special educational needs and what will be provided to meet these needs (sometimes referred to as "statementing").
Statutory assessment A very detailed examination of a child’s special educational needs co-ordinated by the LEA - includes reports from a variety of people who know the child e.g. parent, teachers, educational psychologist, medics and social workers.
Study Support Voluntary learning activities outside normal lessons to improve children's motivation and build their confidence
SW Social Worker - A person employed by CSF who works with children and their families by assessing and planning how to meet their needs. Arranges services and provides advice, information, guidance and counselling as needed
