Mainstream School An ordinary school that most children attend which is usually local to where they live.
Maintained School A school funded by HCC that follows County procedures and policies.
MDA Multi-Disciplinary Assessment – when professionals from a range of services give advice to schools or the LEA – eg speech and language therapist, educational psychologist, occupational therapist etc
ME Myalgic Encephalomyelitis – type of Special Educational Need
ME Mandatory Exceptions
MECSS Minority Ethnic Curriculum Support Services – a service within CSF that provides support for minority ethnic pupils in schools and advice and support on equal opportunities.
M.Ed Master of Education

MFL Modern Foreign Language
MH Mental Health
MH Mentally Handicapped
MHT Mental health Trust
Middle schools A school for pupils aged between 9 and 13 years in Hertfordshire. This three tier system (first, middle and upper schools) exists in Berkhamsted, Buntingford and Royston.
MISPER Police acronym for missing persons
MLD Moderate Learning Difficulty - type of Special Educational Need. We do have some special schools which provide for the educational needs of pupils whose overall educational performance is significantly below other pupils of a similar age. Pupils are provided with access to an appropriately modified mainstream curriculum through the use of relevant material, resources, teaching styles, modified approaches to learning and levels of staff support not normally available in a mainstream setting
