LEA	Local Education Authority – is now known as HLA - Hertfordshire Local Authority which is responsible for schools in Hertfordshire.

LGE	Local Government Employees
LIARMP	Local Inter Agency Risk Management Panel
LLDP	Lifelong Learning Development Plan
LLSC	Local Learning Skills Council
LLT	Leading Literacy Teachers
LMNS	Local Management of Nursery Schools
LMS	Local Management of Schools
LMSS	Local Management of Special Schools
LPS	Leadership Pay Scale - for teachers
LRC	Learning Resource Centre
LPSH	Leadership Programme for Serving Headteachers
LRM4	Local Resources Management version 4. – Accounting system used by schools
LSA	Learning Support Assistants – previously known as Welfare Assistants – often working with an individual pupil with a statement which is funded by the LEA (see also NTA, SNSA)
LSB	Local Schools Budget
LSC	Learning and Skills Council – body which has replaced the TEC
LSC	Learning Support Centre
LSCB	Local Safeguarding Children's Board - now known as HSCB (Hertfordshire Safeguarding Children Board)
LSE	Learning and School Effectiveness
LSP	Local Strategic Partnerships
LW	London Weighting – reference to salary payments
LWA	London Weighting Allowance – reference to salary payments
M&E	Monitoring and Evaluation
MA	Master of Arts - qualification
MAPPA	Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements
Mainstream School	An ordinary school that most children attend which is usually local to where they live.
Maintained School	A school funded by HCC that follows County procedures and policies.
MDA	Multi-Disciplinary Assessment – when professionals from a range of services give advice to schools or the LEA – eg speech and language therapist, educational psychologist, occupational therapist etc
ME	Myalgic Encephalomyelitis – type of Special Educational Need
ME	Mandatory Exceptions
MECSS	Minority Ethnic Curriculum Support Services – a service within CSF that provides support for minority ethnic pupils in schools and advice and support on equal opportunities.
M.Ed	Master of Education
Merlin	A Police database
MFL	Modern Foreign Language
MH	Mental Health
MH	Mentally Handicapped
MHT	Mental health Trust
Middle schools	A school for pupils aged between 9 and 13 years in Hertfordshire. This three tier system (first, middle and upper schools) exists in Berkhamsted, Buntingford and Royston.
MISPER	Police acronym for missing persons
MLD	Moderate Learning Difficulty - type of Special Educational Need. We do have some special schools which provide for the educational needs of pupils whose overall educational performance is significantly below other pupils of a similar age. Pupils are provided with access to an appropriately modified mainstream curriculum through the use of relevant material, resources, teaching styles, modified approaches to learning and levels of staff support not normally available in a mainstream setting
MNSI	Multi-needs sensory impairment – type of Special Educational Need
MoW	Meals on Wheels
MPLS	Multi Professional Local Service – within Children, Schools and Families structure
MPLT	Multi Professional Local Team – within Children, Schools and Families structure
MPS	Main Pay Scale – teaching pay
MSAs	Midday Supervisory Assistants
