EAG Equalities Action Group
EAL English as an Additional Language – refer to MECSS
Early Years Action When staff in the early years setting identify that a child has special educational needs, together they plan activities that are additional to or different from those provided by a schools' usual curriculum. An Individual Education Plan will usually be devised.
Early Years Action Plus When staff in the early years setting are provided with advice or support from outside specialists. A new Individual Education Plan will usually be devised.
EAQ Easily Answered Question
EAZ Education Action Zone – an area designated as requiring intensive support to raise educational stamdards, achievement and opportunities. Hertfordshire does not have an EAZ.
EBD Emotional Behavioural Difficulty - type of SEN - All children will misbehave at times; it is almost normal. Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties describe a pupil whose behaviour impedes his/her educational progress and is persistent over a significant period of time. Hertfordshire does have some ‘special’ schools for pupils with emotional and behavioural difficulties. These schools provide for the educational needs of pupils whose overall educational performance is significantly below other pupils of a similar age due to their social and/or emotional experiences. Pupils are provided with access to an appropriately modified mainstream curriculum through the use of relevant material, resources, teaching styles, modified approaches to learning and levels of staff support not normally available in a mainstream setting.

EP/Ed P/Ed Psych Educational Psychologist. A person who has had training in psychology to understand more about the ways children learn, think and behave and is also a qualified teacher. They can help to find out why some children are having more difficulties in school than others are. They support schools, parents and the LEA in meeting the learning needs of pupils, but particularly those who have or may have special educational needs.

ESC Education Support Centre – These centres arrange and provide educational programmes for pupils who have been permanently excluded. They also support pupils attending mainstream primary and secondary schools whose behaviour is giving concern and who may be at risk of exclusion. With both groups of pupils the aim is to provide short-term intensive support not long term placement.

EWO Education Welfare Officer. Works with schools, parents and children in resolving difficulties, which lead to a child not attending school regularly. They also assist in matters related to the employment of school children and the protection of children from abuse. The Education Welfare teams work closely with schools, pupils and parents in promoting regular school attendance and helping to resolve difficulties that may lead to a child not attending school regularly. They are also responsible for enforcing the employment of school children regulations and ensuring that schools and the education department fulfil their child protection responsibilities.
