Hertfordshire County Council is one of only five councils to be awarded Beacon status for asset management.
Beacon status is granted to councils that demonstrate a clear vision, excellent services and a willingness to innovate within a specific area. New Beacon themes are announced each year and councils invited to submit bids. An independent panel evaluates these and a small number of councils are awarded Beacon status.
Hertfordshire won the award in 2005 for using its resources in the most efficient way and ensuring surplus assets are recycled to provide money for projects like new schools, highways and elderly people's homes.
As part of the Beacon initiative, the council works with other authorities to help raise the standard and quality of their services.
