When you are in hospital……. A social care service at Herts and Essex Hospital, Bishop’s Stortford

The service is for
  • Adults staying in hospital or attending day hospital, their families and carers.
  • People who will be returning home after a stay in hospital.
  • People who will be moving to a residential or nursing care home.
  • If you are in need of any advice or assistance concerning children or young people please contact the Customer Services Centre on 01438 737500. This is a small hospital team and has no children, schools and families worker attached to it.

    What we can offer
  • Information – on a wide range of social care services.
  • Help – to plan for leaving hospital and for ongoing care and support.
  • Advice – on welfare benefits, housing and other problems.
  • Support – for those coping with ill health.


  • How to contact us
    You can contact us yourself or ask a member of the nursing staff, a relative, friend or carer to contact us on your behalf
  • By telephone on 01279 827245.
  • By fax also on 01279 827245.

    You can contact us between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm, Monday to Thursday; 9.00 am and 4.30 pm on Friday - although it is best to call between 9.00 am and 12.30 pm when our secretary is there. There is an answerphone which will be checked the following working day if nobody is in the office when you call.

    In emergencies, outside our working hours please contact our customer service centre on 01438 737400 regarding adult care.

    If you live in Essex, there is a separate team of social workers with which you can be put in contact. If you do not live in either Hertfordshire or Essex and need more than just quick advice or information, your local Social Services Department can be contacted on your behalf.
