Support and treatment services for people with mental health problems

There is a wide range of services offering support and treatment to suit people’s differing needs:

Day hospitals can provide an alternative to in-patient care, even for people who are quite ill.

Acute units provide a protective environment in which to treat patients who are particularly unwell and to re-establish them in the community.

Community Mental Health Centres are bases from which mental health nursing and social work staff, psychiatrists, psychotherapists or psychologists assess people’s needs and provide or arrange treatment and other support.

Day centres, drop-in services and supported employment projects provide social support and rehabilitation to enable people to get back to normal life.

Hostels and other supported accommodation are available to help people who need a high level of support to manage in the community.

Advocacy groups help those who find it difficult to speak up for themselves to explain their needs and express their views.

Further details of these can be found in the External links on the right of this page.
