If you are entering a nursing home and need nursing care from a registered nurse, the NHS will pay a contribution towards your fees. The amount paid will depend on your need for nursing care.
The NHS will also pay an additional amount to the care home if you need continence products. A nurse from your local Primary Care Trust will determine how much should be paid to the home for your nursing needs.
Whatever your income, the NHS contribution towards this nursing care from a registered nurse is graded at either £45, £83 or £133 a week, based on the level of nursing care you need. This is called the Nursing Care Determination and is reviewed each year.
You will still have to pay for the part of your fees that cover your accommodation and personal care costs, but you may get assistance from the county council towards this.
The manager of any care home which provides nursing care will be able to give you more information and should have copies of a Department of Health leaflet called 'NHS funded Nursing Care in Nursing Homes - what it means for you'. You can order a copy or view it online by selecting the link called 'Dept of Health: publications' on the right of this page.
IMPORTANT: These pages are a summary of a leaflet published by Adult Care Services. To view the leaflet on-line or order copies, select use the link called Adult Care Services Publications on the right of this page and navigate to the Older people section.
