Extra care housing

Having your own home is very important – it’s the place you feel safest, and is somewhere that is yours. That’s what most of us want. However, as people get older, or have to manage with disabilities, extra help may be needed in order to stay at home.

Many people can continue to live in their own homes with support such as a home care service or attending a day centre. A variety of aids and equipment can also help people to live their lives more fully and remain independent.

However, it is sometimes not possible to continue living at home. This may be because the accommodation can’t be adapted for a disabled person, the stairs are a problem, or the house is too big to keep heated. When staying at home becomes a problem, many older people say that they don’t want to move into a care home when, with some extra hours of home care in more suitable accommodation, they could continue to lead their own lives.

Adult Care Services believe that everyone has a right to live as independently as possible and our efforts are focussed on working with our partner organisations to help people gain and maintain independence.
