How will you assess what I need to pay?

The county council’s Adult Care Services must follow national rules for working out what you need to pay and whether we can help towards the cost.
  • We will need to know about your financial situation to see what you can afford to pay towards your residential or nursing home care.
  • If you have savings or capital of more than £22,250 or sufficient weekly income to pay for your care, you will be expected to pay the full costs.
  • Even if you have savings or capital well above £22,250 you should consider contacting us before you go into a home, to discuss what will happen when your savings fall below this level.
  • Depending on their financial situation, your husband/wife may be asked to contribute towards the costs.
  • Normally, the value of any property you own will be taken into account, although in some circumstances it may be ignored. Further details are in the link called Moving into a care home - what happens to my own home? (below)

IMPORTANT: These pages are a summary of information about paying for residential or nursing home care. Full information is in a leaflet published by Adult Care Services. To view the full text of our leaflets on-line (or order copies) please use the link called Adult Care Services Publications (on the right of this page) and navigate to the Paying for services section.
