Warning to flood victims about rogue traders

Conmen and cowboys could try to exploit the flash floods currently being seen across the county, Hertfordshire Trading Standards has warned.

Using cold-calling tactics, the rogue traders could approach householders offering quick-fix solutions to their plight.

Residents are urged not to buy on the doorstep, but to get at least three quotes from reputable traders before agreeing to any work.

Keith Emsall, Executive Member for Community Safety and Culture, said: "We have seen in the past how problems caused by extreme weather, such as the heavy storms earlier in the year, are used by conmen.

"They claim to offer a solution to people's distressing situations, but in reality just compound their misery by ripping them off."

People with home insurance should check with the policy provider before agreeing to any work.
