What Trader ? - Now there is a web site that may be able to help.

At Trading Standards we are often asked to recommend a trader to carry out good, reliable, value for money work. Unfortunately, we cannot do that and instead offer some tips on how to lessen the risk of employing a bad one.

TrustMark is a scheme supported by the Government, consumer groups, and the building industry. Its aim is to provide information about 'reputable' firms to do repairs, maintenance & improvements work in your home or garden.

If a firm displays the 'TrustMark' logo you know that an approved trade association or other certification organisation has checked the firm and found it meets certain standards the Government have set.

Remember however, that not every trader can be relied upon to tell the truth and that 'TrustMark' sign might not be genuine.

SO CHECK THE 'TRUSTMARK' WEB SITE - select 'TrustMark' from the external links.

Trading Standards maintains its advice as follows:
  • Never agree to have work done on the spot by someone who knocks on your door.
  • Ask family, friends or neighbours if they have used anybody they have been happy with. If this isn’t possible you could contact a trade association for details on reputable traders in your area.
  • Ideally you should try to get at least three estimates from different traders so you can compare costs and make a decision, free from any pressure that you can feel under if the trader is there with you
  • When you’ve found a trader who you are happy with, ask them to give you a written estimate to confirm what has been agreed and the exact price. A genuine trader will be more than happy to do this for you.
  • You may be asked to pay a deposit and the balance on job completion. If there are any problems they can be sorted out before you pay the full price.
  • Be aware once you have paid a deposit you have agreed to the contract and if you change your mind you may not get this back.
  • Never pay in full before the work is done.
You will have statutory rights under the Supply of Goods & Services Act 1982 for any work you have done.
