Consumer Advice

Advice & guidance is given on a wide range of issues to enable consumers to pursue their grievance with retailers and traders to a satisfactory conclusion.

Each year Hertfordshire Trading Standards receives over 25,000 contacts. About half of these are a result of residents of Hertfordshire contacting Consumer Direct (East of England). Other contacts will be as a result of complaints / enquiries to other Consumer Direct Regions or from direct consumer contact by other means.

We are working in partnership with Consumer Direct to offer you advice.

The headings below will hopefully give you the information you need, but if not, then click on the 'About Herftfordshire Trading Standards' link on the right to find out how to contact us.

Trading Fairly

Consumers have the right to expect goods or services they buy are accurately described and fairly priced, with honest credit or hire terms offered. Businesses have the right to trade on equal terms.

Part of our work is to ensure that consumers are treated fairly by traders supplying those goods or services. This involves :

Investigating fair trading complaints.
Examining prices and descriptions.
Monitoring advertisements, catalogues and brochures.
Checking credit and hire agreements.
Prosecuting companies who disregard the law.

If you wish to give feedback about the Trading Standards pages on this website, or about the way we undertake our work then please select the signpost “Trading Standards Feedback” from the internal links.
