A Calibration Service for Trade and Industry

What we can offer you

Hertfordshire Metrology Laboratory is part of Hertfordshire County Council Trading Standards Department.

Originally set up to ensure Trading Standards own equipment meets legal standards, the Laboratory has been providing calibration services to industry since 1989.

It is well equipped with high quality weighing and measuring equipment from trusted suppliers to meet industry needs. The Laboratory is now officially recognised by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) for the calibration of class E2 weights.

Carried out by fully trained and experienced staff, our calibration service is fast, efficient and competitive offering you:

• A variety of testing through a wide range of weights, linear and capacity measures, weighing and counting machines and measuring instruments.
• A carefully controlled laboratory environment and precision equipment.
• Calibration certificates showing the equipment used, traceability to National Standards, test methods employed, full results and uncertainty of measurements, as required by quality assessors.

Our UKAS Services

Weights
Our Laboratory is UKAS Accredited for calibrating Class M2 M1 and F2 weights from 1 mg to 25 kg and class E2 from 1mg to 20kg

Other non-UKAS calibration services we offer

Weights
We provide in-house certification for weights and artefacts over 25 kg.

Weighing Machines
Small machines are tested in our temperature controlled laboratory.

High capacity machines up to 5 tonnes can be tested on site using standard weights which are immediately available. These test weights are also available for hire with a certificate of traceability if required.

Measures of Length
Metric rules and tape measures up to 30 metres in length are calibrated and certified to an accuracy level suitable for general purposes and for master tapes against which working tapes are compared.

To help in the testing of measuring instruments we can mark and verify distances.

Sonic measures of the type used by estate agents can be tested and certified.

Capacity Measures
Capacity measures from 1 ml to 20 litres are tested gravimetrically in accordance with British Standards and National Weights and Measures Laboratory requirements.

Other Equipment
We can test specialist equipment such as bulk flowmeters, testing or force gauges (up to 500N), motor cycle brake testers and so on.

Free Quotations, Competitive Prices
We provide immediate telephone quotations for standard items. For more unusual items or those involving the use of heavy equipment we are happy to visit your premises to see how far we can be of assistance.

Putting Your Needs First
Our out-of-hours service minimises costs and disruption to your business by calibrating machines on site when they are not in use. This is available by prior arrangement.

Collection and Delivery
For your convenience we can help with delivery and collection of loads of up to one tonne. Trading Standards’ sites in St Albans and Hemel Hempstead offer alternate locations for you to deliver and collect certain equipment. We may also be able to provide a service direct from and to your premises. A fee may be charged for collection and delivery away from our Hemel Hempstead office.
