Animal Feed hygiene compliance statement

From 1 January 2008, the EC Feed Hygiene Regulations will apply to virtually all business producing animal feed.

This includes livestock farms producing animals and animal products for human consumption, and arable farms growing and selling crops for feed.

It is expected that the majority of producers will already comply with the standards either through assurance schemes or existing good practice on farm.

Farmers, as primary producers, will have to follow basic feed hygiene procedures, ensuring that feeds are protected against contamination and spoilage; equipment for mixing, storing and transporting feed is clean and maintaining records of feed used or sold. Farmers adding in pre-mixtures or additives will have some additional requirements.

Businesses that fall within these regulations will now have to make a compliance statement. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) have formulated a simple template which you can use. It can be found by following this link: www.food.gov.uk/multimedia/pdfs/article18farmersguide.pdf
This must be completed and forwarded to your local Trading Standards by 1st January 2008. Hertfordshire businesses must register with us.

Those businesses which are already registered with us under the Feeding Stuffs (Establishments and Intermediaries) Regulations 1999 will not have to submit a further statement.
