The Digital Switchover Scam
Hertfordshire Trading Standards have been made aware of a worrying practice by some aerial installation businesses using the ‘Digital Switchover’ as a smokescreen to confuse and deceive consumers into purchasing unnecessary items, such as new equipment or over charging for minor work done.
Traders who misdescribe the work required or mislead as to its cost not only commit criminal offences, but also damage the reputation of the many honest businesses in Hertfordshire that rely on their reputation and consumer confidence to run their businesses.
Only traders who are members of trade associations are permitted to use their logos, which are usually trade marks. Only installers who are registered digital installers can use the digital tick. To use these logos falsely is a criminal offence which which can result in prosecution.
We are asking Hertfordshire traders in this industry sector as well as members of the public to make us aware of any traders suspected of carrying out this or any other misleading practice. All calls are dealt with in confidence and you may remain anonymous. Any traders found adopting such practices will be investigated and could face legal action.
Hertfordshire Trading Standards have become the first Trading Standards in the country to adopt the Trust Mark good trader scheme. Trust Mark is a government endorsed scheme helping consumers find reliable and trustworthy tradesman in the home improvement industry sector. To find a Trustmark trader follow the link on the right called Hertfordshire Trustmark. It also gives details on how to join the scheme.
