My front-line role
I am the Conservative County Councillor for Hatfield South division. The ‘Your Community’ section provides local service information, news, events and contacts about the area.
I represent the interests of around 15,000 residents of the communities of Hatfield South, Hatfield West, Welham Green and the surrounding rural areas. I work closely with the Welwyn Hatfield Borough Councillors for the same areas and our Member of Parliament, Grant Shapps.
Residents who wish to raise any issue with me are welcome to do so at any time, whether by e-mail, letter or telephone. I will always deal promptly with casework issues.
As is the case with every County Councillor, I have a locality budget of £10,000 a year to spend on community projects in the division. Follow the links for more details of the scheme and details of applications I have previously agreed and declined.
My County Council responsibilities
I was first elected to the County Council in 2003 and was selected for Cabinet in 2005. I have held this position since then. My cabinet portfolio is Highways & Transport, which means that I am responsible for Highways, Transport and Road Safety. Cabinet is responsible at law for most of the council’s policy decisions, but these are made in the light of recommendations from a range of cross-party Cabinet Panels. I am Chair of the Highways & Transport Cabinet Panel.
Roles on outside bodies
I am a main board member of the Herts Groundwork Trust, and also sit on the Regional Transport Forum, East of England Rural Forum, Harlow Stansted Gateway Transportation Board and the Welwyn Hatfield Highways Joint Member Panel.
I am a Governor and Chair of the Resources Committee at De Havilland Primary school, and on the Management Board of The Park Education Support Centre.
Personal, professional and political details
I am married with two grown up daughters and three grandchildren. I live in Hatfield and have been in the local political arena since 1996, having served the community on Welwyn Hatfield Council for 10 years. I retired from the telecommunications industry in 2002 after a long career in radio and data engineering dealing with companies all over the world.
