My front-line role
I am the Conservative councillor for Knebworth and Codicote division. The ‘Your Community’ section provides local service information, news, events and contacts about the area.
I represent the interests of the residents of the Knebworth and Codicote on the county council. There are six very active parish councils within my patch, the meetings of which I try to attend as often as I am able. Together with the regular contacts I enjoy with residents, I am afforded an excellent insight into the issues which really impact on day to day life in the individual communities and do my best to respond and assist wherever I can.
Residents who wish to raise any issue with me are welcome to do so, whether by e-mail, letter or telephone. I will always deal promptly with casework issues.
As is the case with every county councillor, I have a locality budget of £10,000 a year to spend on community projects in the division. Follow the links for more details of the scheme and details of applications I have previously agreed and declined.
My county council responsibilities
I am the Executive Member for Environment and Community Safety at the County Council. My previous post was Executive Member for Education and Skills, a post I held for two years after acting as deputy to successive executive members for Education and Culture.
Roles on outside bodies
I am a former board member of the Hertfordshire Careers Service and was the initial Chairman of the Hertfordshire Investment and Infrastructure Partnership. I continue to hold various other posts, including school governance responsibilities, charitable trust memberships and sit on various related panels and partnership groupings within local government and the local community.
Personal, professional and political
I was born in Hitchin and have lived within a few miles of the town all of my life. I have lived in Gosmore since 1977.
Married, with five children and four grandchildren, I have been involved with local government for most of my adult life. I was elected as the District Councillor representing Hitchin (Priory) on North Hertfordshire District Council in 1990 and have continued to represent that ward ever since. I have represented the District and Borough Councils of Hertfordshire as a political appointee on the East of England Regional Assembly’s Planning Panel. I chaired one of the four standing committees dealing with conformity matters pertaining to the Regional Spatial Strategy and sat on the Hertfordshire Environment Forum.
Golf, sailing, cricket and cycling have long been special hobbies. I support local Rugby and am a vice president at Letchworth RFC. I am also one of the local authority representatives on the management group at Hitchin RFC. A confirmed countryman, I like nothing better than a day out with the family dog.
