My front-line role
I am the Liberal Democrat County Councillor for the Abbots Langley division. My division includes the four District Council Wards of Abbots Langley, Bedmond & Primrose Hill, Langleybury and Leavesden. The ‘Your Community’ section provides local service information, news, events and contacts about the area.
I am also a District Councillor for Langleybury Ward and work closely with Abbots Langley Parish Council, regularly attending its meetings, reporting and answering questions on County matters.
As is the case with every county councillor, I have a locality budget of £10,000 per year to spend on community projects in my division. This is the third year of the scheme. In the first two years, applications have exceeded £20,000 so I have had some invidious prioritising to make. However, do not let that dissuade local organisations from continuing to apply. Follow the links for more details of the scheme and details of applications I have previously agreed and declined.
My County Council responsibilities
I am currently the Chairman of the Liberal Democrat Group at County Hall. I am its spokesman on the Audit Committee and on HR (Human Relations) matters. Currently, I sit on the Performance, Resources & Parnterships and Herts Local & Libraries Cabinet Panels, and also the Standards Committee. I have been the Lib Dem representative on the employers' side of the Joint Staff Committee since 1989.
Roles on outside bodies
I am deeply involved in the Abbots Langley Community as an executive member of Churches Together in Abbots Langley, chairman of Abbots Langley Performing Arts Society and member of several local organisations including the Abbots Langley Players, Abbots Langley Gilbert & Sullivan Society and Abbots Langley Local History Society.
In addition to reaching out to the local community through frequent Liberal Democrat publications, I have submitted an article every month to the “Abbots Langley Villager” since its first edition in July 1994.
I have been a member of Hertfordshire's SACRE (Standing Advisory Committee for Religious Education since 1989 and its Chairman since 1993.
Personal, professional and political details
I am the eldest county councillor and, with one exception, the current Chairman of the County Council, the longest serving. I had the honour of serving as Vice Chairman of the County Council for three years, 1997-2000. I led on Education for the Lib Dems in the Lib/Lab coalition of 1993-97 and was Chairman of the Fire & Rescue Authority from 1997-99.
