My front-line role
I am the Conservative County Councillor for Letchworth South division which consists of the Letchworth South West and Letchworth South East wards of North Herts District Council. The ‘Your Community’ section provides local service information, news, events, and contacts about the area.
I represent the interests of approximately 15,000 residents in this area and work closely with the district councillors for the two wards since we have a joint interest in maintaining services to the community. This is an easy relationship since I spent 14 years as a district Councillor before I became a County councillor.
As is the case with every County Councillor, I have a locality budget of £10,000 a year to spend on community projects in the division. Follow the links for more details of the scheme and details of application have previously agreed and declined.
My County Council responsibilities
I was first elected to the County Council in 1997 and since then have held the portfolios as Executive Member for Schools and Education, Children’s Services, Fire Service, Libraries and Community Safety as well as serving for two years as the Chairman of the County Council. At present I am a member of the Herts Local & Libraries Cabinet Panel and the Pensions Committee.
Roles on outside bodies
I am a member of the Hertfordshire Police Authority and I am the Council’s delegate as a Governor and a member of the Board of Management of the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation. I am a director of the Hertfordshire Groundwork Trust.
Personal, professional and political details
I was born in Lancashire but have lived in Letchworth for almost 40 years so feel quite at home here. After National Service with the Royal Air Force, I spent 35 years working for an international oil company travelling all over the UK. I never found anywhere to beat Hertfordshire.
