My front-line role

I am the Labour County Councillor for Shephall division of Stevenage.  The ‘Your Community’ section provides local service information, news, events, and contacts about the area.

I represent the interests and views of all my constituents living within the Shephall Division of Stevenage which includes the areas of Shephall, Bandley Hill and Poplars, a population of about 10,000.

I work very closely with the 6 local councillors that represent my division.
I am also a Stevenage Borough Councillor for Roebuck Ward. I hold three “surgeries” a month in different parts of my division where I deal with a wide range of problems. My biggest area for complaints is homelessness and housing related issues.  

As is the case with every County Councillor, I have a locality budget of £10,000 a year to spend on community projects in the division.  Follow the links for more details of the scheme and details of applications that have previously been agreed and declined.

My County Council responsibilities

I was first elected to the County Council in 1981 and served for 8 years. I spent most of my time serving on the former Culture and Recreational, Highways and Personnel Committees.

When I returned to the County Council in 2005, it was the result of a by election.  I currently sit on the Overview and Scrutiny Committee, the Hertfordshire Local & Libraries and the Health & Adult Care Cabinet Panels.

I have done over 30 years (and gained a platinum badge) as a school governor of various primary and secondary Stevenage schools, as well as the Stevenage College.  I am currently having a break but I hope to be a governor again in the near future.

I am the Chair of GEMMS (Generally Elderly Members Meeting Socially) which is a Stevenage and district based charity, grant aided by the County Council that deals with families and individuals affected by Alzheimer’s.
I have a particular interest in the Armed Forces and the welfare of those who have served our country.  I sit on the Committee of a local community Centre in Shephall.

Personal, professional and political details

I started my working career as an Apprentice Carpenter and Joiner and rose up the ladder ending up as a Principle Housing Manager, a career that spanned 38 years and 2 local authorities.

I first joined my Trade Union in 1958. I am currently a retired member of UNISON.

I became a member of the Labour Party over 40 years ago and the Co-operative Party in the late 1970s.

Since retiring I have worked in the community as an unpaid voluntary helper.
In the time since I was first elected to represent the residents of Shephall Division I have never supported any cuts in services proposed by the County Council especially where those cuts would mean hardship to my Shephall residents. I have never claimed any expenses travelling to meetings, either to County Hall or locally.
