My front-line role
I am the Conservative County Councillor for Hitchin South division. The ‘Your Community’ section provides local service information, news, events and contacts about the area.
I represent the interests of the 12,000 residents living in the town centre and the south of the town. I work closely with the North Herts District Councillors for the same areas; our Member of Parliament, the Rt Hon Peter Lilley, who lives locally; and active residents’ and local community groups.
Residents who wish to raise any issue with me are welcome to do so at any time, whether by e-mail, letter or telephone.
As is the case with every County Councillor, I have a locality budget of £10,000 a year to spend on community projects in the division. Follow the links for more details of the scheme and details of applications I have previously agreed and declined.
My County Council responsibilities
I am a member of the Cabinet and the Executive Member responsible for Transformation, Performance and Waste Management.
Cabinet is responsible at law for most of the council’s policy decisions, but these are made in the light of recommendations from a range of cross-party Cabinet Panels.
Within my current portfolio I am also responsible for the county’s 2012 preparations and I chair the Hertfordshire is Ready for Winners Partnership which has a responsibility for delivering the maximum benefit for Hertfordshire from the 2012 Games through increased sporting participation as well as new opportunities for local businesses. I also chair the county-wide Waste Partnership which is driving forward both reduction and efficiencies in dealing with waste.
Roles on outside bodies
I have a regional role as Chairman of the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority as well as serving on regional bodies representing my portfolio. Locally, I have served as a governor on Hitchin Girls School for 30 years and I am a trustee of a number of local charities including the Hitchin Educational Foundation which provides an endowment to the local secondary schools and local children of about £70,000 per annum. I have always taken a particular interest in planning issues and have campaigned to ensure Hitchin retains its character and is not overwhelmed by large scale development.
