My front-line role
I am the Conservative Councillor for Bridgewater (Dacorum) Division and Deputy Leader of the County Council. The ‘Your Community’ section provides local service information, news, events and contacts about the area.
I represent the interests of the residents of six parishes: Flamstead, Markyate, Great Gaddesden, Frithsden with Potten End, Little Gaddesden and Northchurch. I work closely with the Dacorum Borough Councillors for the same areas and formally meet with them and the parish chairmen on a quarterly basis. I also liaise with our Members of Parliament, Mike Penning and David Gauke.
Residents who wish to raise any issue with me are welcome to do so at any time, whether by e-mail, letter or telephone. I will always deal promptly with casework issues.
As is the case with every County Councillor, I have a locality budget of £10,000 a year to spend on community projects in the division. Follow the links for more details of the scheme and details of applications I have previously agreed and declined.
My County Council responsibilities
I have been Deputy Leader of the Council since 2007 having previously held Cabinet responsibility for Education; Adult Social Care and Community Safety. As well as deputising for the Leader, I hold the cabinet portfolio for resources and economic wellbeing.
The resources portfolio gives me lead responsibility for proposing and monitoring the budget and formal responsibility for our people and property. I also lead on economic development in the county (and in that role I am the Council’s representative on the Local Enterprise Partnership) and chair the Performance and Resources Cabinet panel. I also chair our Pensions Committee
Roles on outside bodies
I am Chairman of the Hertfordshire Police Authority, which sets the plan and the budget for policing in Hertfordshire.
I have kept an interest in Education and chair the Hertfordshire Admissions Forum.
Nationally I am a Hertfordshire representative on the Local Government Association and am a member of both the Culture, Tourism and Sport board and the European and international affairs panel. I also serve on the INLOGOV (Birmingham University’s Institute for Local Government) practitioners’ advisory board.
I am a trustee of the Watford Palace Theatre board and am a member of the advisory councils of the Herts Community Foundation and St Alban’s school.
Personal, professional and political details
Born in Bristol, I was brought up and educated in Berkshire. I studied French at the universities of Birmingham and Lyon before working in banking for 10 years and in financial advice thereafter.
I have been interested in politics since university and was a member of Milton Keynes Borough council from 1992-96.
When I have time I enjoy listening to jazz and classical music, going to the theatre or visiting art galleries and museums. I am actively trying to visit all of Simon Jenkins’ 1000 best houses and 1000 best churches. I love watching rugby, rowing and cricket.
