My front-line role
I am the Conservative County Councillor for Flamstead End and Turnford division. The ‘ Your Community ’ section provides local service information, news, events, and contacts about the area.
The division that I represent is quite unique with three distinct neighbourhoods, Turnford, Flamstead End and Rosedale. All three have their own distinct characteristics, Turnford and Rosedale are characterised by a predominance of social housing, some of which has been purchased under the tenants’ right to buy, whereas Flamstead End is a mix of rural and urban areas and includes Cheshunt Park and farming communities. By far the most noticeable feature of the division is the collective strength of the cohesive communities, although observers will notice that the communities are geographically separated by the A10 road network. As a direct result of the A10 cutting through the centre of the division facilities for communities have needed to reflect the local needs of all three areas. Also included in Flamstead End is the Whitefields Estate, owned by Enfield Homes and similar to the historical migration from London boroughs a majority of the residents are from Enfield and north London. As with the earlier migration patterns he local community has evolved and settled into the local community.
The division also includes Hertford Regional College’s Turnford campus which has recently been redeveloped.
I work with Broxbourne Borough Council (where I was previously a Councillor) and local councillors; Broxbourne Housing Association (where I am a Board member); Enfield Homes; local voluntary organisations including CVS and Groundwork Trust; local faith groups; Herfordshire Constabulary; local schools and two Children’s Centres, High Trees and Longfield; Hertfordshire Regional College to support local improvement projects.
As is the case with every County Councillor, I have a locality budget of £10,000 a year to spend on community projects in the division. Follow the links for more details of the scheme and details of application have previously agreed and declined.
My County Council responsibilities
I sit on the Children’s Services and Corporate Parenting Cabinet Panel, Audit Committee and Pensions Committee. I also actively participate in one/two day scrutiny panels looking at various County Council policies. I attend Health and Adult Care and Policy and Performance Cabinet Panel, when required. In addition to these panels, in my role as a corporate parent, I am a member of a Fostering Panel and regularly visit two residential children’s homes. I have previously sat on Education and Community Safety and Culture Cabinet Panels.
Roles on outside bodies
I am a governor on Roseland Primary School; a Churchwarden in the Parish of Broxbourne with Wormley (and trustee for several local charities as a result); a member of the Board of Broxbourne Housing Association; a County Council representative on Broxbourne Children’s Trust Partnership, a County Council representative on the Council for Voluntary Services in Broxbourne and East Herts management board; a Broxbourne Borough Council representative on Dame Letitia Mondon Charity (almshouses) and a member of Longfields Children’s Centre advisory board. I am also surgery secretary to Charles Walker, MP.
Personal, professional and political details
Prior to becoming involved in local politics, I spent 25 years as an accountant in various commercial and industrial businesses. My experience in business and particulary finance has proved useful in my role as a Councillor.
I joined the local Conservative Party when I married Tony and reduced my work commitments, like many people I worked long hours and did not have the available free time to do so earlier.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as an elected Councillor, working for and with the local community and meeting many of the people that I represent.
