Hertfordshire Police Authority is an independent watchdog on the police. Its job is to make sure that policing in Hertfordshire is effective and efficient and that local people have a say in how their police services are provided.

The Authority:
  • sets priorities and targets for the force
  • decides how much money will be spent on policing and how much people will pay towards it each year in their Council Tax
  • holds the Chief Constable to account for police performance
Consultation plays a key role and its members are always keen to hear people's views.

Formal committee meetings of the Authority are open to public and local people are encouraged to take advantage of the question time held at the start of all meetings. There is also the opportunity to present petitions to the Police Authority.

Dates, times and venues for all the Authority's meetings are available on its website.

There are 17 members of the Police Authority - 9 County Councillors and 8 independent members:
  • Chairman - David Lloyd
  • Vice Chairman - Stuart Nagler
  • Clare Berry
  • Nigel Brook
  • Sarah Coffey
  • Terry Connor
  • Keith Emsall
  • Robert Gordon
  • Brenda Griffiths
  • Chris Kitchin
  • Sally Newton
  • Kevin McGetrick
  • Derek Scudder
  • Richard Smith
  • Ron Tindall
  • Bengie Walden
  • Sue Warman
Each district and borough area has a nominated Police Authority Lead (PAL) to champion local issues and represent the Authority on local partnerships, such as the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRP's).

Find out the name of your local PAL and other information about the Police Authority on the website (link given above).
