Looking for Work

Looking for work can often be difficult, especially if you do not find a job straight away. Applying for jobs and receiving no response can be disappointing, but there are a number of ways you can make your job search more effective:

On-line searches:

There are many web sites now on-line that are dedicated to recruitment. Many offer the facility to search for jobs and, if requested, will e-mail you job lists on a regular basis. You can also place your CV on some sites to enable potential employers to view it.

Be warned: while applying for jobs on-line may seem quicker and easier, you must make sure your CV and covering letter are appropriate for each individual job. When applying by e-mail it is also more likely that you will not receive a response, so it may be a good idea to note down the phone number of the employer or agency to check they have received your application.

Recruitment Agencies:

You can register with recruitment agencies on-line, but it can be more effective to visit a local agency and arrange a meeting to discuss your job requirements. There are many recruitment agencies situated in all major towns.

While the agencies will search for a permanent position, it is often the case that you will be given a 'temp' role that may only last for a short period. While you do not receive the benefits of a more long-term job, 'Temping' can give you the chance to gain work experience and impress your employers!

Speculative Approach:

If you would like to work for a particular type of company or in a particular location, writing a speculative letter and enclosing a copy of your CV may get you some work experience or even a permanent job. By asking the company to keep your records on file, they may contact you with details of vacancies in the future.

TIP: Try to find out the name of the person you should write to. Writing a letter to "The Manager" or "Human Resources" may not get to the right person or may be lost in the company's postage system.

Job Centre:

You can use the computer system at The Job Centre to search for current vacancies. Use the link below to find your nearest Job Centre.

Ask around:

getting your friends and family to help you can be a good way to find work. Don't be afraid to ask the people around you about any jobs available, it often works!
