He himself acquired hidden disabilities through a severe brain injury when he was a teenager. His career involved working with many high profile organisations, including the BBC, London Disability Arts Forum, Disability Action Network, The Guardian, Open University, Times Educational Supplement, Royal Ballet, Royal College of Surgeons and MENCAP. Through his photography, Steven aimed to challenge society's perceptions and promote a better understanding of disability and a more inclusive society. His photographs capture ordinary people participating in mainstream activities, "doing" not simply "being". His work aims to show the satisfaction that may be achieved, in spite of the difficulties superimposed on an individual by their disability and society’s response to it. He illustrates some of the challenges that disabled people have to overcome and places emphasis on their individual successes and the strengths they possess. His work highlights the opportunities available to disabled people to enhance their quality of life. His work encourages the audience to focus on the contributions disabled people make to society.
