How we work with District Councils and other organisations during the winter.

Co-ordination with District, Boroughs, Schools and Bus Operators.
Hertfordshire Highways has developed close working relationships on winter issues with Hertfordshire's District and Borough and town and parish councils, and ensures these councils are involved in severe weather planning early on when severe weather is forecast, to provide a coordinated local response.

Hertfordshire Highways' communications strategy in times of severe weather includes working closely with Districts and Boroughs, Town and parishes and local emergency services ensuring that regular updates and communications are provided to help manage the response on a local level. These authorities also have access to a wide range of information provided by Hertfordshire Highways' winter service planning systems.
District /Borough/ Town and Parish and Community Groups
We have broadened our availability of bagged salt from the 10 District and boroughs to town and PARISH and local community groups to promote local self help, a limited amount of bagged salt will be provided to allow local communities to treat those areas within there community in times of severe weather, thus supporting the efforts of Hertfordshire Highways Gritting teams.
Bus Operators

Hertfordshire Highways and Hertfordshire County Council's Passenger Transport Unit (via the Interlink Partnership) have developed close working relationships with local bus operators. Selected key scheduled bus routes are served by "priority 2" precautionary salting, which means that the busiest bus routes are salted as a precautionary measure if cold weather is forecast.
Schools
Hertfordshire County Council works closely with schools to ensure that timely, accurate information is sent out to the public about whether or not they are open.
From 2009/10, Hertfordshire County Council has introduced a new system which will enable schools to text information on their closure status which will be published instantly on the front page of HertsDirect.
