Births, Marriages and Deaths for England and Wales

HALS Marriage 1901

Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies hold the national indexes of births, marriages and deaths on microfiche from September 1837 to 2005. They are also available on ancestry.com and findmypast which is free to use in all Hertfordshire libraries.

Getting a copy of a certificate

From the information on these indexes, it is possible to order a certificate online from the General Register Office's website or telephone 0845 603 7788. They cost £9.25 each. You can no longer obtain copy certificates from Registration Offices as a new Central Registration Certificate Archive has been established at The Old Courthouse, St Albans Road East, Hatfield, Hertfordshire AL10 0ES. By telephone, with a credit/debit card on: 0300 123 4045. By post, collect an application from any local Registration Office, complete and return by post to: Registration Certificate Archive, The Old Courthouse, St Albans Road East, Hatfield, Hertfordshire AL10 0ES. The cost is £15.00 for priority service and £9.00 for non-priority service.

What do the indexes show?

Births

1837-1911, child's surname and first names, from 1912 onwards, mothers's maiden name.

Marriages

1837-1911, there are two entries for each individual. You can cross reference the marriage to see if the page and volume number are the same.

Deaths

1837-1865, names only. 1866-1969 the age at death is given. From 1970 onwards, the date of birth is shown. The indexes are also freely available (up to c1950) on Free BMD.

How to get a copy of an historical baptism, marriage or burial entry

We can provide copies from baptism, marriage, and burial registers for Hertfordshire events (usually for family history purposes), where microfilms are available. Copies can be ordered online under "search and copy services".
