Support for adoptive parents & families
The adoption support team works with adopted children and adoptive parents, adult adoptees, young adults wishing to trace their adoption records (or their children who have been adopted). The team includes social workers and professional assistants specialising in adoption issues. Working alongside the social workers in the team we have specialist input from a play therapist and Sensory Intervention Attachment Occupational Therapist. We also access specialist knowledge on education, financial issues, disability and other areas that you may need support with.
We can offer advice and support on lots of adoption issues, either by meeting with you, or by telephone. We can also put you in touch with other adopters who have
shared the same experiences. Our services include:
- Social groups/coffee morning
- Parenting courses
- Advice and information
- Training events
- Counselling and therapeutic support
- Dad's curry nights
- Life Story work
- Children's activities and events
- Annual picnic
- Monthly parent and toddler group
- Therapeutic services including: Single adopters network, same sex adopters social groups, adopters of children with SEND, letterbox support
We also produce a twice-yearly me-newsletter for all adopters, which includes information on training, events, support groups and recommended books and materials.
Adoption Support Fund
The Adoption Support Fund (ASF) has been established because many families need some kind of therapeutic support following adoption and too many have struggled to get the help they need in the past. The Fund will enable them to access the services they need more easily in future.
To access the Fund, you will need to have an assessment of your family's adoption support needs by the local authority. This is a current legal obligation of all local authorities.
To find out more about the fund, please follow the link at the bottom of this page.
