Services for Gypsy, Traveller and local communities

Hertfordshire has one of the highest Gypsy and Traveller populations in England, with an estimated 360 families in the county each year. The population is currently accommodated by 34 sites, 11 of which are owned and managed by the Gypsy Section.

The Gypsy Section has existed for more than 40 years and its 13 staff manage and maintain accommodation for around 200 families on 10 permanent and one transit site. These services are funded from the rents collected from these sites.

We believe that it is in the interests of Gypsies, Travellers and the general public to have proper facilities for Gypsy and Traveller accommodation in an effort to limit unauthorised encampments.

The Gypsy Section will deal with any issues that arise with the Gypsy and Traveller community or with unauthorised encampments. Anyone with any comments or concerns can call the special telephone hotline on 01707 897367.

This information is also available in the leaflet Services for the Gypsy and local communities. To view the full text of our leaflets online, or order copies, please select the Adult social care publications link and navigate to the General information section.
