Tax Credits

Tax credits are means-tested help for people who either look after children or are working, or both.

Child tax credit is an income-related benefit for families with dependant children.  It can be paid to lone parents or couples.  CTC has replaced the amounts paid for children in most benefits and can be claimed on its own or along with the working tax credit (WTC). Child benefit is paid in addition to CTC and should be claimed separately. It is administered by HM Revenue & Customs

Working tax credit (WTC) is an income-related benefit paid to working people whose earnings are low enough. You can get it if you are employed or self employed and work enough hours.  It can be paid to working adults with families and also working people who do not have children. It is administered by HM Revenue & Customs. Your income must be below a certain level and you must usually not be subject to immigration control. Seek advice if this applies to you.

There have been substantial changes to tax credits in 2011 - 2012.
