The Undergraduate Route

The undergraduate route combines your chosen BEd, BA or BSc degree with Qualified Teacher Status(QTS). To gain entry to an undergraduate course you will be required to have at least 2 A-levels or equivalent, with at least one being in a National Curriculum subject. Most courses equip you for primary teaching, but there are also some undergraduate secondary programmes. Full-time courses last 3 or 4 years. There are some 5 year part-time courses but it is recommended that you check the availability with the provider you are hoping to train with. If you have already completed 1 year of full-time higher education, you may be suited to a 2 year course in order to gain QTS.
Basic entry requirements for all initial teacher training (ITT) courses are GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in English and Maths, and if you wish to teach primary or Key Stage 2/3, Science GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) is also required.
If you wish to apply for a place for September 2008, your application should be made by January 2008 (date to be confirmed). However, places may still be available after this date, particularly for secondary shortage subjects. You can apply online at
www.ucas.com. Primary courses are very popular and so applications should be made as early as possible.
