The Undergraduate Route

The undergraduate route combines your chosen Bachelor of Education (BEd), Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Entry requirements vary according to the specific course and provider although a minimum of 2 A levels or equivalent is usually required. Most undergraduate courses equip you for primary teaching, but there are also some undergraduate secondary programmes. Full-time courses last 3 or 4 years. There are some part-time courses that take longer but it is recommended that you check the availability with the provider you are hoping to train with.
If you have already completed 1 year of full-time higher education, you may be suited to a 2 year course in order to gain QTS.
Basic entry requirements for all Initial Teacher Training (ITT) courses are GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in English and Maths and if you wish to teach primary or Key Stage 2/3 (ages 7-14), you will also require GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in a Science subject. If you wish to apply for a place on an undergraduate route into teaching, you can apply online at
www.ucas.com. Primary courses are very popular and so applications should be made as early as possible.
