Choosing to teach in Herts could be the best decision that you make.

Hertfordshire Council has recently received EXCELLENT status in the Audit Commission Performance tables and was voted COUNCIL OF THE YEAR in 2003.

We are recognised as one of the leading education authorities in the country and the County has approximately 550 schools in total, comprising primary, secondary (many with specialist status) and Beacon schools. There is a great range of sizes and types. Sizes vary from one form entry primary, secondary, special, middle, education support centres, community schools, faith schools and single sex schools.

In April 2001, Hertfordshire was the first authority to fully integrate its Education and Social Service teams. Our Children, Schools and Families Service now brings together professionals from a range of disciplines to pool their knowledge and experience. This holistic approach is designed to help attain the best possible levels of education, health and development with the aim of ensuring all children get the most out of their time at school and are able to fulfil their potential as they grow into adults.

The strategy embraces the Specialist Schools Programme and other school development programmes which benefit young people. It also includes the development of shared learning and professional support among schools and the development of collaborative networks of schools from all sectors.

Our Children Schools and Families Service strategy includes the develo9pment of a diversity of schools to cater for the widest range of needs in today’s children and young people. In fact, the DfES has supported Hertfordshire as a Diversity Pathfinder.

Whatever the schools’ settings, the environments are well-ordered and supportive, with teaching and learning as the prime focus.

We’re proud of the success of Education in this county and it relies on the hard work and dedication of our teachers.

Hertfordshire is a great place to build a career. We are fully committed to supporting and developing our reaching staff – and we look forward to welcoming you as a member of our highly motivated, well-supported team of teaching professionals.

Well-Being

Hertfordshire believes the most important investment it can make is in its staff and this is why Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) is encouraging all staff in their schools to lead healthier lifestlyes and improve their work/life balance. The authority realises that the wellbeing of the staff is just as important as that of the students. Teaching is a demanding and sometimes stressful job and HCC aims to ensure that teachers and other staff in schools have the support, advice and information they need to manage their working responsibilities and reduce the pressures and stresses they are facing. In order to do this, Hertfordshire subsidises subscriptions to the national Well-Being Programme for any school wishing to join and employs a dedicated Co-Ordinator, whose role is to support the staff in making improvement to identified concerns.

Staff are working together to improve and balance workloads; to improve work/life balance; to improve communication; to give greater acknowledgement to achievements and to improve links between managers and staff.

Hertfordshire is now one of the largest contributing authorities to this programme with over 100 schools taking part, and the wellbeing of teachers in Hertfordshire is definitely improving year on year.

The programme recognises that every school has the potential to be a creative and motivating place in which to teach, work and learn. It focuses on the development of healthy organisations.
