Teaching Taster Courses

Teaching Taster Courses are regularly run by Hertfordshire Local Authority to provide an overview of teaching from a practical perspective.

The following courses are planned for the this academic year:

Primary Teaching - priority given to suitable male candidates
October 2009 (Complete)

Primary/Secondary Teaching - for black and minority ethnic candidates
November 2009 (Complete)

Secondary Priority Subjects
26 - 28 January 2010 Venue: Stevenage

Application forms for the courses are available to download above. You can register your interest for the taster courses by emailing teachinherts.hdc@hertscc.gov.uk or telephone 01438 844871.

The three day course will combine two seminar based sessions, providing information on qualifications and other requirments for a career in education, as well as one day's closely supervised observation in a Hertfordshire school to give you an opportunity to experience what it is like to teach in the classroom today.

Comments from previous participants include:

"Excellent speakers, great discussions. Has definitely confirmed I want to pursue this."

"Definitely exceeded my expectations. Got most useful contacts and information."

"Whole three days interesting, informative and thought-provoking."

"Opportunity to be in classroom essential in helping decide whether to train as a teacher."

It is intended that all taster course applicants should be eligible to enter teacher training within one year of attendance, and places on the course will not be available to those who have already applied for Initial Teacher Training.
You should therefore hold the standard entry requirements for initial teacher training, ie maths and English GCSE at grade C or above, or the equivalent. Normally candidates will also require 2 A level passes or GNVQ qualifications at grade C or above. In practice many applicants already hold degrees and are looking to change career (even so the maths and English qualifications are still a requirement). Those wanting to train in Key Stage 2 or 3 will additionally require a science GCSE, grade C or above (or equivalent).

You will also need to contact the Teacher Information Line on 0845 6000 991 to obtain a reference number and an information pack.
