Linked Governor - role description
There are many aspects of the school that governors need to take a specific interest in. This work can be done by one governor on behalf of the whole governing body. For example, not everyone can have a detailed knowledge of SEN provision in the school but one person - the Linked Governor - can work closely with the SENCO and report back. The Linked Governor may also link with a subject area, for example Literacy, Numeracy, Science.
The role of this governor is:
- To take a interest in and gain more detailed knowledge of their area
- To know what is contained in the School Plan for that area
- To be involved in the review of the School Plan for your area and to be part of the planning process for the setting of new priorities
- To help the governing body in its critical friend role by asking questions about progress and challenging appropriately about attainment in that area
- To report back at agreed intervals either to the appropriate committee or direct to the governing body.
It is essential that Linked Governors work with the full agreement of the Headteacher. You will need to discuss any visits with the Headteacher before they are made.
It is good practice to hold regular (perhaps termly) meetings with the relevant subject leader or co-ordinator. In these meetings you can agree what information you will need to enable you to fulfil your role. You will be able to celebrate success, ask questions and listen to concerns.
Be careful to make it clear that your role is to have a more detailed understanding of the area and that you are not there to be lobbied to resolve problems!
