Sandwich Courses 2008/2009
If you are required, as part of your course, to undertake placement periods you may be eligible for financial support. You will need to arrange for your college to send confirmation that the placement is compulsory and details of the placement.
The categories of placements are as follows:
- Paid Placement for the Year
If you are on a paid placement for the whole of the academic year and your total full time attendance at your college is less than 10 weeks, you will be assessed for a contribution to fees at half the normal rate and you will be able to claim the Non Means Tested maintenance loan at the Reduced Rate.
- Certain types of Unpaid Placement for the year in the Public or Voluntary Sector e.g. unpaid service in a hospital or public health laboratory in the UK.
If you are on one of these placements you will be assessed for a contribution towards fees at half the normal rate. You will also be eligible for the maintenance loan and the maintenance grant at the normal rates.
- Other Unpaid Placements for the Year
If your placement does not qualify as service in the Public or Voluntary Sector you will be assessed for a contribution towards fees at half the normal rate and you will be eligible to apply for the Non Means Tested maintenance loan at the Reduced Rate.
- Placements for Part of the Year
If you are on a placement for part of the academic year, and you are attending your college for the rest of the year, you will be eligible to receive living costs support at the normal rates available to other students. This support is subject to means testing, irrespective of whether the placement is paid or unpaid.
