Child or young person’s criteria for accessing counselling service
The child or young person should be experiencing emotional distress which has persisted over time.
The child or young person has experienced a traumatic event or crisis with recognised traumatic consequences.
The child or young person is willing to engage in counselling/art therapy on a voluntary basis.
The child or young person is not engaged in counselling or therapy with any other agency at the time.
The child or young person, in negotiation with the counsellor/art therapist, will develop a counselling/art therapy contract.
School Criteria
A senior staff member to act as a liaison with counsellor/art therapist.
School to ensure adequate accommodation and time.
Liaison person to ensure that all lesson notes, etc, are available to the child when lesson time is missed for counselling.
School to provide support for teachers who may have to deal with immediate after effects of a counselling/art therapy session, or provide respite space and time for the child.
Parent Criteria
Parents will need to provide signed consent for counselling/art therapy (Fraser Guidelines).
Referral Criteria
Referral should be via Head Teacher or SENCo.
Criteria for Discontinuation
Child or young person feels task is complete.
Counsellor/Art Therapist feels task is complete.
Counsellor/Art Therapist feels counselling is no longer appropriate for positive or negative reasons.
Attendance deteriorates and three or more sessions are missed without good reason.
