Exclusion from school

Provided here is a brief overview of the process involved if your child has either been excluded from school permanently or for a fixed period.

The process of exclusion that we follow is based on a legal framework that can be complicated to understand. Please contact us if you would like any help in understanding this process.

The headteacher of a school (including nursery schools from September 2003) maintained by the Local Authority can take a decision to exclude a pupil, including any pupils above or below compulsory school age, from the school for a fixed period of days or permanently:
  • in response to serious breaches of a school's discipline policy. All schools have a written policy which sets out how pupils are expected to behave.
  • where allowing your child to remain in school would seriously harm the education and welfare of your child or others in the school.
